What to Drink on New Year's Eve

Posted 3:21 PM by

We're only a couple of days away from the New Year, and you may just now be realizing you need to stock up for your parties and get-togethers, or maybe you just need something simple to toast at midnight with your loved ones. If you're like a lot of people, Champagne and other Sparkling Wines can be intimidating, but Kahn's is here to help!

You might be asking yourself, "What should I drink on New Year's Eve?" The short answer, of course, is drink what you like! That might be Beer, Vodka, Whiskey, or Red Wine, but for most people New Year's=Bubbly, so that's what we'll discuss here.

As you may know, Champagne can get pricey but there are plenty of great options for sparkling wines in every price range. Cava, which is a sparkling wine made in Spain, can a great inexpensive option. These wines are made in the Chapenoise Method, meaning they are made in the same way that Champagnes are made. One of our best sellers is the Segura Viudas line ($7.99), which consists of a Brut (dry), Extra Dry (slightly sweeter), and Brut Rosé.

Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine that can also be quite affordable. They are typically dry, fruity, and lighter in body. A nice option is the Mionetto Prosecco ($10.99). On a side note, Proseccos are also perfect for use in Bellinis and Mimosas.

If you prefer something on the sweeter side, a Moscato d'Asti is an outstainding choice. While not as bubbly as a traditional sparkling wine, these sweet wines from the Piedmont region of Italy tend to have a slight effervescence, along with flavors of apricots, peaches honey. One of the best ones at Kahn's is the Ricossa Moscato d'Asti ($12.99).

Two nice sparklers with bit more sweetness are M. Lawrence's "Fizz" and "Indy" Demi-Sec ($10.99). These wines are made in Michigan and are great options for Moscato drinkers who want something bubbly!

Sparkling wines from California are a great way to get an outstanding wine for a reasonable price. Many Champagne houses like Mumm and Roederer even manage properties in California and make wines the same way they do in France. A couple of Kahn's favorites are J Winery's Cuvee 20 Brut ($21.99), a delicious and complex wine with notes of citrus fruits. Another tremendous value is Piper Sonoma Blanc de Blancs ($10.99), a dry and crisp bubbly made from Chardonnay that features intricate flavors of lemons, limes, tangerines and honey, with a rich yeastiness.

Of course, the gold standard for sparkling wines is Champagne. These wines can only be made in a specific region of France, but their fame has extended so far that their name has become a generic term referring to all sparkling wines. Chapagnes are made from a blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Meunier. A few superb bubblies that would be great options for your festivities include Bernard Remy Carte Blanche Brut ($32.99), Moët & Chandon Imperial Brut ($33.99), Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label Brut ($39.99), and Bollinger Special Cuvée ($59.99). If you want to impress your friends with a big name, Moët and Veuve Clicquot are the #1 and #2 selling brands of Champagnes in the world, respectively, and are both crowd-pleasers.

If you're looking to go all out for New Year's (or for any occasion), a couple of the most exquisite Champagnes available are Krug Grand Cuvée ($136.99) and Armand de Brignac Ace of Spades Brut ($239.99). Krug is one of the most unique Champagnes on the market because it blends approximately 120 single vineyard Champagnes from Krug's properties that range from at least 10 vintages to as many as 15. Ace of Spades is one of the most sought after Champagnes in the world whose popularity has grown exponentially in the last decade due to its prominence in the hip-hop industry. In fact, rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z loved this Champagne so much that he bought the winery earlier this year!

Of course, these are simply starting points. As I noted earlier, the best thing to drink is what you like. So, stop by Kahn's and pick up a few bottles of bubbly for New Year's Eve and see what you like best!

Cheers and Happy New Year,
