Battle of Belgium 2014 Info and Blank Brackets

Posted 7:36 PM by

Attention to all Mavens of Malt, all Lords and Ladies of Lambic, and all Sultans of Saccharomyces!  We kindly request the presence of your finely tuned, discriminating palate at the 4rd annual Battle of Belgium, a 3 day, 32 beer, single elimination blind taste-off that will result in the crowning of 2014’s King of Belgian Beer!  Last year’s winner, Unibroue Don de Dieu, defends its crown in a competition with a completely new twist, a *completely* blind first bracket!  That’s right, we won’t reveal the seeds until round 1 has ended.  Come join us for the Battle of Belgium and vote the best beer to the top!

And don’t forget the bracket challenge, details and a blank bracket to fill out are below.  Blank brackets and event info is also available at all 3 Kahn's locations.  Completed brackets can be turned in at any store, but must be turned in by 4pm March 13th in order to be eligible to win prizes.  Winning sheets will be tabulated each night, with nightly updates of player standings, and prizes will be awarded March 15th after the final beer has been crowned victor!

Battle of Belgium Dates & Times

March 13-15th from 6-8 pm, Kahn’s Keystone, 5241 N. Keystone Ave.

The Tastings:  Initial matchups are based on seeding, but this year the twist is that seeding will be totally secret until round 2!  All match-ups will be tasted blind, customers vote for their favorite beer, and the beer with the most votes advances to the next round.  In the event of a tie, a Kahn’s staff member will serve as the tie-breaker.   At the end of each day, brown bags will be removed and the beers will be revealed. In the event of a tie in the final round, the winner will be the beer with the greatest number of votes throughout the tournament. There will be Beerocracy drawings at the end of every Battle of Belgium round!

The Rounds:   Round 1 is March 13th.  Results will post that night, and the next 16 beers that advance to round 2 go head to head March 14th.  The final two rounds will be conducted on Saturday, March 15th.  8 beers will fight it out in Round 3 from 6-7 pm, we will quickly tally the winners and then Round 4 will pit the last 4 beers head to head from 7-8pm.

The Battle of Belgium Bracket Challenge:

The Battle of Belgium Bracket Challenge is your chance to prove that you are the true Baron of Brew. The overall winner will receive the official noble beer title of Baron(ness) of Brew, a ton of bragging rights and an outstanding prize that will include an Any-Time Beerocracy pick (if the winner is a K Klub member) and a K Klub membership if the winner is not a member.  Prizes will be awarded for the top three brackets.

How to Play:   First, pick up a bracket at any Kahn’s location.  Fill out your Battle of Belgium bracket by selecting the beers you think will advance and eventually win.  We’re making it a little trickier this year by keeping the seeding completely blind before the first round.  We have provided the list of the beers. Each player will have to decide how to seed the beers and place them in brackets.  Brackets must be turned in by March 13th at 4:00 at any Kahn’s location. Points are awarded for each correct pick and will be scored in the following way:  Round 1 = 1pt, Round 2 = 2pts, Round 3 = 4pts, Round 4 = 16 pts. Follow Kahn’s on Facebook (Kahns Fine Wines) and Twitter @ Beer_at_Kahns for round by round updates.
